30% of the websites run WordPress

30% of the websites run on WordPress. This statement means that WordPress is the most used Content Management System in the web.

The web technology survey firm W3Techs surveyed 10 million top ranking websites on Alexa and the result was that the Content Management System WordPress powers 30% of the websites.

This means that 30% of the most powerful websites in the entire internet use WordPress. Note that W3Techs surveyed all 10 million top ranking websites regardless of whether they are powered by Content Management Systems (CMS) or not.

When it comes to CMS market shares, WordPress holds a comfortable 60.2 percent of the CMS market. Its nearest competitor, Joomla, has seen its usage jump from 2.8 percent to 3.1 percent, while Drupal is up from 2.1 percent to 2.2 percent.

Earlier this month,WordPress co-creator Matt Mullenweg tweeted:

WordPress was created in 2003.  Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little decided to build a new platform on top of b2/cafelog. They probably didn’t know that they are about to start a whole industry that millions of users, bloggers, developers would benefit from.

WordPress is very popular mainly due to its features that combine simplicity, flexibility and its advanced publishing tools that make it easy to create and update content. It goes without saying that one of the main success factors is the extended community of plugin developers that contribute in building WordPress and making the most used CMS in the web.
